Spirituality

Spiritualism or Defining Spirituality
An essay for a course from Universal Life Church Seminary
Rev. Carol Birdwell

This course had 19 lessons and covered a great deal of the history of western thought and the development of religion. It was directed toward the minister so that she would know how to respond to people who argue against spirituality as unscientific.

It is my belief that today we are seeing science and spirituality merge and meet each other in Quantum Physics, but it may be years yet before this becomes widely recognized as fact. Just last week my 17-year old nephew sent me an email in which he expressed his atheistic beliefs, but did not wish to go into explaining why he feels that way. He has never been exposed to any religion in his young life.

I dove right in and took the opportunity to explain some of my spiritual beliefs to him in a very kind and loving way, that I hoped might be “dropping a seed” for him to pull out and look at some time in his future, perhaps after it has even “grown” a bit. There was only love between us in this email exchange and he wrote back a nice note and I was thrilled.

As ministers it is important that we observe people and decide which ones are mind driven and which ones are heart driven. If we want to talk about our beliefs to others it is important that we never, ever push our beliefs, but always be gentle, kind, and understanding, and be aware of where “they are coming from”.

In this course, we studied people whose names I was not familiar with, that I have never studied before, and we also studied many well-known names, such as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, Einstein, Nietzsche, Merlin, Jesus, Buddha, Socrates, and others. We also learned of various movements and groups.

I agree with our course teacher that if Jesus were alive today, it is very likely he would not be a Christian, and if he were a Christian, he would not be the kind of Christian we are most accustomed to seeing most of the time. He would certainly not be a “fundamentalist” Christian, but more likely a Positive Christian or a New Thought Christian, like the kind of Christian I am. For many years I even took offense at the word Christian and certainly would not call myself one!

Jesus did not come to this planet to start a religion. None of our great teachers and avatars did. They came to teach. Jesus was our big brother and came to teach us that we are Gods, co-creators with all of the energy of the universe, of all that is and ever was and ever will be.

He came to teach us that LOVE is the lesson, and that we can do the same miracles he did and “even greater”, when we know and accept who we are, all of us a part of the Divine Creator, all Divine Energy, all the same Sons of God that he was, our teacher, not our savior as the fundamentalist Christian churches believe.

We walk our paths, our many different paths that all lead back to God, from whence we came and in whom we have our very lives and breathe our very breaths, the breath of God, with whom we are all one, and all of us are all one together, all the same Divine Energy, that changes form, forever and ever, and is always God, as you, as me, as the guy next door.

I very much enjoyed this course, and intend to continue to study it over and over. There is a lot of history and philosophy in it with which I want to become more familiar. There are more “reads” ahead for these lessons I have saved on my computer.

Thank you.

Metaphysical Healing

I had been surfing the net when I came across the ULC seminary website and it was precisely what I had been looking for. The ULC provided a one of a kind concept and idea. So, I became ordained immediately in 1999 and have acted as as a Reverend and Minister of Peace ever since. It was personal goal to become ordained and doing this has really assisted me to spiritually grow as well as opening my thoughts to a hunger for universal truths. I have always felt drawn towards learning about the subconscious, conscience, people's true way of being and the personality of people in general, ever since childhood … searching for my true self, you could say. Your class was of particular interest to me, so I took it. For me, it was the perfect next step to learn from the lessons offered.

I've moved past many ordeals since beginning this course and I have spent a lot of time going through the lessons and pondering. For quite some time after my marriage broke up, I was a mess and my life was completely imbalanced. It felt as if the floor under me had disappeared. I kept sinking into dark hole and finally dropped to my knees in pain and wept. My brother, with narry a word, just lightly touched my shoulder and I felt a sensation of warmth, love and peace.

It was a similar situation to what was mentioned in one of the lessons and now I understand what my brother did.  He used the "Laying of hands" whether he was aware or not.

The information on your course brought many things to light and helped me in spiritual journey and has aided me in understanding what is meant by spiritual healing and energy fields. I find that I project a different way of being since reading and meditating on your information. The thing I like most about your course is that it has helped to become a more spiritual being with a new mindset. It has even reinforced proper nutrition and exercise for the physical.

I would like to say it has taken me a while to send you this essay only because I kept getting side-tracked until now. I would like to share that your program was timely and it has helped me to become more open minded to energy fields and manifesting healing.

I have always felt like plant and I grow when I learn and that's exactly what your program did for me. Though Many times, I found myself going off on tangent researching additional information and being baffled by how much there is to know … so many disciplines that intertwine. I noticed in my research that I was delving more into more holistic cures for disease. The spirit, mind and body present a plethora of disciplines and paths for practitioners.

I personally found the Endocrine System very interesting as it relates to chakras.

I was fascinated by a book I came across named "Adrenal Fatigue" by Dr. J. Wilson. I found it very informative plus it can be used as a scientific tool to aid in healing.  The book is a great read with contains self-help exercises.

I am somewhat of an orator by nature and have also researched, as a hobby, information on NLP, general-semantics, Tarot, Birth Bio-Rhythms and Etymology. I find this other knowledge compliments your program beautifully. I realize and acknowledge the world is more than meets the eye. The concepts and ideas in the course also gave me a new drive and pragmatic exercises which have caused my new personal mission to be a personification of a gentle smile with eyes that can only project pure intention. On a more serious note I've started looking into becoming a Registered Massage Therapist or Personal trainer.

The mix of your program, my life's learning keep directing me towards helping others.

The Master of Metaphysical Healing lessons were great.

Metaphysical Healing

The “Human Energy Fields” was as wonderfully detailed overview of the body and its many components. The energy fields and chakras discussion was vital for what was to come in the rest of the course. The added illustrations helped considerably in learning the material.

The “How to do it” lesson is excellent. I firmly believe that if we cannot heal ourselves, we can be of no use in healing anyone else. This is a simple but beautiful exercise that can be done at anytime when there is an affliction in the body. The explanation of positive hand and negative hand were also very helpful.

Using your hands as sensors is an extremely important and helpful lesson. The scanning techniques described, along with the illustrations provided allow a student to take the information and apply, complete with visual aids. Since, in my opinion, the scanning is the primary methodology in learning about another person’s condition, this is one of the more important lessons in the course.

The “unruffling” technique is also an important one that takes some getting use to. At first, the trick is to sense the auric fibres. Once one is aware of these fibres, then it is much easier to begin the unruffling process. I have to admit at being intimidated by this exercise at first, but practice makes perfect and after a number of workings with this technique, the process seems to be much easier.

Another important component is the “etheric shower”. This technique allows the healer to flush away any residual contaminated etheric energy left over from a healing. While an aspiring healer may ask why this is necessary since it cannot be seen, one can also ask what does it hurt to do this cleansing. If nothing else, it allows the healer a point of separation between each healing and the next.

There is a wealth of information in the course about the practical and business aspects of healing and in how to present one’s self to clients. These are all valuable facets of the healing business. This course was very detailed, very well written, and I feel that I have walked away from it with some real, practical information that I can use from this day forward. I recommend this course to anyone who is serious about healing.

Spiritual Awareness

Masters of Spiritual Awareness Final Essay
Rev. Barry Deel

When I decided to take the spiritual awareness course I was in a time of my life when I had become disconnected from my own spiritual path that I had chosen.  I was trying to find a way to fan the flame that I had so become depended upon in my life.  I had become bitter and resentful of all the situations and people involved that seemed to be some how against me or out to hurt me.  I had thrown all my beliefs out the window and stopped using the lessons that I had learned over my life to guide myself through this time.  I had even thought that I had lost my connection to Divinity and thought that my chosen gods and goddesses had turned from me leaving me alone and without any reason as to why they would have done this.

I spent many hours in self-loathing and pity cursing the fact that I had made really bad choices.  I was going around asking people that I knew and thought that I could trust beyond a shadow of a doubt to see if they could help shed some light on what I was going through, but they could not give any information or reasons that made any sense.  So, I decided that I need to take a good look at myself and see what I could find.  All that I could come up with was the fact that I had an urge that was very strong to learn something but not knowing what it was I had no where to even start looking for this new learning.

When, I would be out and about among the people that had some how hurt me I would here about the ULC in some way or form.  The ULC kept coming up, coincidence, I don't think so.  I thought what the heck, I am a member of the ULC and what could it hurt to see what they had to offer.  Well, I found that the ULC was exactly what I needed and was looking for.  The first course I took was the Maters of Metaphysical healing do to the fact that I was a Healer with my own practice I figure that I would use this course to judge the validity of the lessons offered.  By the time I had finished the twenty week course I had come to realize that this was "It".  I found myself going through the courses being offered and deciding which courses that I wanted to take after I had completed the metaphysical healing course.  At that moment when I made the choice to continue with the learning provided by the ULC the courses lined up on there own as to which would be next and all the way to the last course.  I knew right then and there that my divinity had not stopped talking, but, that I had stopped listening.  Once that connection had been realized within me the flame of my spirit sparked and began to burn though it was not as bright as it had been in the past.  I realized that my divinity had wanted me to return to a beginning point to reassess my life and what I had learned.

The masters of spiritual awareness began with a very simple insight, find beauty in life.  This insight was so simple and so easy that I thought what in the world are they trying to convey?  Well, even the simplest of things and actions can have the impact of a lightning strike.  I followed the lessons of the awareness course and practiced the techniques and found that the flame of my spirit was getting brighter.

As all of this was going on I realized that the course was teaching me the same things that I had already done in my life and practice when I started out on my chosen spiritual path.  It was like a homecoming to me and every time I made a connection with what was being taught and my earlier years I would found myself laughing.  Yes, at my self for being so stupid in forgetting were I had come from.  I had gotten caught up in my mundane life of trying to make money, pay bills, meet my needs that I had lost myself and had forgotten my vision and purpose, which I now understand to be the incorrect choice, not the wrong choice.  Due to the fact that I now know I am fulfilling my vision.  But, everything in life needs to be in balance.  The spiritual awareness course was just what I needed to reassess and become even more connected in my spiritual practice and balanced in everyday life.

By becoming aware of the coincidences in my life and truly looking at them I now have had great opportunities arise that I thought that I would never have in this life time.  The Spiritual awareness course was a spiritual life preserver for me and I would recommend it to anyone who feels or thinks that they are not connected to divinity or to life.

Metaphysical Healing

From:  Rev. Joe

Subject:  Getting Started with Metaphysical Healing

To all my brothers and sisters Awake the Healer

Some of the things in this lesson  I disagree with. A healer doesn’t choose to be a Healer, a healer is Chosen to be a Healer. As a student in healing I believe we go through a process not to be taught but to remember what we already have inside us. Let me explain, like everything in our life, through my studies and readings, long before we are born into this world, we are received by the Higher Power or God to form a contract of different items we are given and are suppose to accomplish in our life time on earth, unless something cuts us short such as a illness or disease, or through our own self destruction of destroying our bodies with smoking, drugs or alcohol.

To me they’re different type of healings, sometimes you don’t have to time to order up your program and to get ready, so it becomes important to be ready 24-7, how we do that becomes important. By the way, everyone in life are called to become healers, some do and some reject it, that’s called Free Will Choice, your creator gave us that.

Choosing a good form to clean yourself up, choose something that you can relax easy, the Chakra System has been an excellent way to assist you in balancing, grounding, clearing, cleansing and reclaiming yourself.

Reading different form and experiencing and finding a comfortable one to work with.
As for myself I sit in a chair upright, hands on my laps, take the phone off the hook, dim the lights, very light music, flute, soft. Close you eyes, take at least three deep breathes inhale deep slowly through you nose filling your stomach all the way into the lungs, hold for three seconds release slowly exhaling through the mouth, repeat this at least three time, when you are inhale think of stepping into an elevator  moving up, think of clearing you mind, body and spirit, think of what you want to accomplish in this meditation, also thinking of relaxing your body parts.

Think of having a large vacuum cleaner at the base of your first Chakra, as you view your seven chakras notice if they are dirty or clean start at the base RED breath in the energized RED and pushing out the Dirty RED at the same time the vacuum cleaner is sucking up the dirty RED, until you have clean RED, continue up and do the same on each  Chakra, until all have been cleaned ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO and VIOLET, by this time your Chakras should be spinning up and down, and has sucked all the dirties into the vacuums sack, so tie the sack and throw it out into the universe to dissolve everything.

While in this stage as the Higher Power if anything else needs to be adjusted, healing is all in the “intent”, leave your EGO at home, be Honest for yourself, remember all the ethics involved. Remember one of the most important things is not to get the Big Head, you are the Channel, by clearing your Chakras you make a better Channel for the healing.

After a few times you will be able to recognize where you need to clear out  the parts, and what started out a forty-five minute process has turned into a five minute refresher.

On the other hand, say a pray, refresh myself and ask for instructions from God he will send the correct amount and go to the places that needs it the most, then with the Choice of Free Will the healing of the person, becomes between God and the person you worked on.

Spiritual Awareness

Dr. of Spiritual Awareness Final Essay by Rev Sharon J. Mayer

I used this course to build on the information learned in previous classes I have taken through UL C Seminary. It is much more intense and involved than the wonderful Spirit Quest course, which should be taken before this class is attempted. The instructors are very knowledgeable and each new concept is explained in terms that anyone can understand. Since the concepts and practice, as presented, were complete I did not use other texts or interpretations of ideas or practices during the course.

Each concept of learning was building upon another. I was so glad to read that not all beings are not able to do all things. So many times I have read that one should just do this or that and everyone who tries is able to see auras, or project good feelings or health to all. At one point I had given up trying and believe that is when my life was in a downward spiral. It has taken me forever to come to terms with where I should be on my path and all because I misunderstood where I should be and what I personally could do or accomplish.   The ideas presented in this course of  Spiritual Awareness is to go at your own speed and practice until you attain the desired level, but if it does not come you are just not to that level on your path as yet.

The explanation of the Laws was new to me and explained in details that I was able to understand. Many of them I had not heard of before but during the lessons when we were to explore our feelings and understanding I was able to see where each came into play in my own life. I may never attain a high mastery of the all information given but I feel better about what I can do, what I must work on, and what I never might be able to do at this point.

The course has shown me that I must never feel inferior or give up again. It is very hard to maintain a positive attitude and give of your energy all the time. I believe my next step is to find a way to have more positive energy given to me on a continual basis. Right now that does not seem to be the case. I try very hard to use other energy instead of my own but it seem at present I am in an area of my life where there is more negative energy directed toward me than external positive energy I have been  working on sending to other.  I will be working on that in the time to come.  I have reached a point of self-love which should help and I no longer feel that I have to do things to please others so my esteem is maintained in my own mind. I am finding my own pace and quiet time to enrich my own nature.

The weeks that have been spent with the lessons are showing an improvement in my well-being and it will be an on-going growth to reach higher levels and goals. This is not a read, learn, and put away class. It is a continual process of growth and the lessons given in the course will assist with the progress I am able to make. I do see very positive change in thought and feelings. I am learning self-love and that it is fine to care about yourself and not selfish at all in doing so to enable you to give more to others.

Some of the information given was new and I am not sure I can accept all of it at this time but will think about it and try my best to understand. I am new to the lessons of spirituality even after about three years of study. I do have a willing to take all information give to me to move forward in my quest. I have learned from the course that this is normal so it does not worry me as it once would have. Being a person who must understand and study all sides of each idea it may take a while longer for me to accept or reject things but while doing so I am learning and this course  has allowed me to think positively about doing things in that manner.

Spirituality

Defining Spirituality
Final Essay
Rev. Brendan C. Cook

Spirituality. A word that means so much to so many people. Life defining, life changing concepts can be bound up in that one word. But how is it defined? What does it mean? How does one approach understanding the many concepts comprised in that one word? Though many have attempted to do so, and many systematic approaches have been developed, it is my belief that defining spirituality is at best an exercise in frustration.

Why, after taking such a superbly prepared and well-informed course, would I argue that defining spirituality is surely an exercise in frustration? Quite simply because the definition of spirituality is highly individual. There may be elements of commonality within what is commonly thought of as spirituality, but the specifics are defined and determined by the individual in question.

How many times have we, as ministers, heard the following: “I’m not really religious, but I do consider myself spiritual,”? When we hear that, what does it really mean? Is the person atheist? Agnostic? Anamist? All of the above? None of the above? Some of the people we meet in our ministry may fall into some, or even all, of these categories at some point in their lives. They may not even be sure themselves where they stand, or may not be able to precisely define their belief set or system. And that’s perfectly fine!

As ministers, it is our job to develop an understanding of the process of developing spirituality. A scientist, for example, may not believe in God in the traditional sense, or even consider him/herself a spiritual person. But they may have a clear sense that they are part of something greater than themselves; a part of the Universe which they are striving to understand through their science. As cogently argued in the lessons of Defining Spirituality, science is itself a religion of a kind and scientists are its priesthood. The evolution of this worldview, its components and influences, are essential for a minister to understand.

A grasp of the evolution of Western thought is, as the course makes plain, essential for every minister in today’s world. Defining Spirituality provides a clear, concise understanding of the major underpinnings of modern Western thought, which is especially useful for those who may not have had exposure to such a depth and breadth of ideas and ideological influences before. The course makes clear how modern thought and modern spirituality are inter-related.

Likewise, however, every minister should have a solid understanding of Eastern thought and philosophy as these both can heavily influence those who declare themselves spiritual and not necessarily religious. Eastern thought, with ideas dating back thousands of years, has become part of the modern American mindset over the last 40 years and been widely embraced by those who do not find fulfillment in traditional religious practice. In order to define spirituality and not be frustrated in the attempt, it is clear that we must define it as broadly as possible and seek to learn and understand as broadly as possible.

Metaphysical Healing

                                                                                                      Sandra Santana

What I Learned

I learned much about the traditional healing methods in South Africa.  The history of the traditional healers and their practices is fascinating and very useful knowledge to have.  I also find it very interesting that the various cultures have their own form of spiritual healing and that there are similarities among them.  I think this is an excellent course for healers to further their knowledge in other healing methods and their origins.  I like learning different healing methods and how they all seem to have a common basis to them.  Exploring the differences make the commonality more interesting. I believe that there is no limit on the amount of knowledge you can attain on any subject.  I would have liked to have more interaction with other class members to discuss other points of view on the subject matter. I think that interaction would have created a forum for more ideas and more points of view.  While online classes are more convenient for me I think this course would be more beneficial if presented in person. I would like to see an updated version of the course that incorporates a variety of other accepted healing methods.  I enjoyed the practices and experience of learning the material for this course.  I also liked writing a response to a potential client. This was good practice for me and something I had not done before.  This was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about an area that I find so important. I believe that metaphysical healers who work in cooperation with Physicians provide an unmeasured benefit to their patients.  Because more and more physicians are acknowledging the benefits of metaphysical healing it has become a more recognized field.  Being a metaphysical healer is a rewarding calling and I am blessed to have accumulated a variety of different sources of information.

Spiritual Awareness

Justin M. Oles
Universal Life Church Seminary
Final Essay
I figured that since the final discourse of this course gives you a bunch of questions to answer that I would answer those questions and call that my essay.  Looking at several other essays on the webpage that seemed to be the general consensus so here goes.
The first insight tells us that the universe will present us with opportunities to meet our spiritual goals and destiny.  We must keep our eyes, minds and hearts open to see these opportunities.  It gives us the awareness of a path for us to follow, it shows us that both our spiritual lives and our mundane lives are a journey, not simple a destination.  By looking out for opportunities to help ourselves and others we are able to more effectively learn the lessons we are meant to learn during each lifetime.
I began to question my traditional religious beliefs as an adolescent largely because a lot of the answers I got were "because that's the way it is" or "because the bible says so."  I never had a personal connection with God and I never felt his presence in my life in the way that Catholics and Christians explained it.  Some people were very aggravated not having an answer themselves and just taking things on blind faith.  Others were more open minded and tried to explain things using biblical fact that directly contradicted historical and scientific fact.  I found later that often this was due to their ignorance and that frequently religion and science can work hand in hand to prove both as being factual.  I also found that if the historical contexts were taken as relative and not literal as they often are by the religious extremists that the two will in fact mesh.
As was taught in middle school about why people hurt others it is often to make themselves feel better.  The sad part is that while this may make you feel better temporarily it does nothing in the long run.  In fact, it only leads to the spread of more hostility as those your hurt often do the same to another to gain back their self worth, thereby causing a never ending cycle of pain and suffering.  If people would help others rather than hurt them they would find that this gives a longer term feeling of happiness and is often reciprocated by others thereby increasing the pleasure and self worth felt.  A good way to begin this process is to try to give everyone you meet a truthful compliment of some sort.  This will make you feel better and make them feel better, a win-win.  If you put someone down it may make you feel better but it will make them feel worse, a win-lose, and ultimately a lose-lose in the long run.
As a minister and servant of others we often find ourselves helping people with situations we are ill equipped to deal with.  While sometimes the logical solution is the best it often fails to deal with the emotional aspect of the issue.  By asking the right questions and learning how to receive and interpret the answers we are better equipped to aid others in their lives.  In doing so we are also better equipped to help ourselves as live will often throw issues our way in our own lives that we have no idea how to deal with.
As humans are better able to understand each other and themselves there will be less fighting and war, people will help others so there will be less poverty and hunger and people will be more able to relate to others so there will be less discrimination and prejudice.  People are here on earth to learn how to be better beings through reincarnation and development of the soul over several lifetimes.
Ultimately these lessons have taught how to better and more happily life with ourselves and others.  It taught how one person can make a difference in the world and how all of us should strive to be better people individually and therefore as a whole.

Spiritual Development

By Jason Stone

I sort of have a knack for being in the right place at the right time when it comes to meeting someone in need, spiritually that is. Several of those times although I knew in my heart what I wanted to tell that person, there seemed to be a wall between my heart and my mouth and I just couldn’t seem to find the right words.  This course helped me tremendously find what I was missing.

This course hit the proverbial nail on the head with the section on Clarity and my personal favorite was the section about the “Power of Now”. The power of now was very insightful to me. Being pagan I have been involved in many different meditation courses, read many different mind quieting books, and done several “shielding” techniques which are really nothing than blocking yourself from all negativity, all frantic thoughts, or one may say finding clarity and finding the power of now.  I work a very stressful job as a Security Officer in a School. Many times I come up on stressful events where I have put myself in the power of now and found clarity without even knowing that is what I was really doing. The power of now is so obviously true. I mean after all you can’t change the past, and you can’t see the future so the only thing you can really address is the present, so why not give every drop of attention you have to it. I very much enjoyed this course. I am looking forward to continuing my education through the ULC. Thank you to all.
